on Right-wing Firm Connection
May 20th, 2005
A Statement from Oriental Land Co., Ltd.
URAYASU, CHIBA - Oriental Land Co., Ltd. has released the following details based on what it has determined so far regarding the article on the business relationship between Oriental Land and "Chuo Kouhatsu" which appeared in the May 20 edition of Yomiuri Shimbun.
We deeply apologize for the wide agitation caused by this situation. We also would like to apologize to everyone concerned for causing them unease.
- Contract with Chuo Kouhatsu
- Starting Date: September 1, 1984
- Content: Contract to clean the headquarters building and he adquarters annex
- Contract Amount: Currently 9 million yen/month, 108 million yen/year (tax excluded)
- Circumstances and Business Performance to date
The Oriental Land representative in charge of the original contract with Chuo Kouhatsu has passed away, so the circumstances surrounding the contract are unclear. However, because the business performance of Chuo Kouhatsu up to now has been satisfactory and the amount paid was reasonable when compared with the general market, as well as the fact that it is a local business, the contract has always been renewed.
- Cancellation of Contract with Chuo Kouhatsu
The contract with Chuo Kouhatsu will be cancelled effective August 31, 2005.
Reason for Cancellation
Because of the report in Yomiuri Shimbun, Oriental Land has conducted an investigation into the assertions. Although Oriental Land could not uncover any evidence that clearly linked Chuo Kouhatsu to right-wing organizations, under current business compliance considerations, a check of the Chuo Kouhatsu representative at the time the cleaning business relationship began would have determined that he was not in compliance. Oriental Land recognizes that it could thus be suspected of having a connection with a right-wing business in the eyes of the public.
As Oriental Land had already decided to switch the contract for cleaning services to one of its subsidiary companies, the contract with Chuo Kouhatsu will not be renewed when it expires on August 31, 2005. Chuo Kouhatsu has been notified and has acknowledged this decision.
Hereafter, we will thoroughly investigate any company we intend to deal with before we make a business contract with them. By doing so, we will reinforce our strong determination to regain public trust.
